Aasvoëlbad

By Voets Toets

Voets Toets Hiking ventured off to the Northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains to explore the Aasvoëlbad Hiking Trails, situated in Brits. It derived its name from the Cape Griffon Vultures that breed in the area.

A very well marked trail with a gradual climb up the mountain

Sunscreen, hydration, energy snacks, and a trusted pair of Merrell footwear

Route:

The trail is very well marked. We started off from the farmhouse and made our gradual climb up the mountain. The route meandered down the side of the mountain into the luscious gorge situated below. The route then led us back up, where we were greeted with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains at the picnic spot. We were then led down to a stream, which had beautiful clean sparkling water where we could hear the baboons calling in the distance. As we made our way to the end of the trail, we had one last breathtaking climb, which led us to the "vulture restaurant" where the vultures go to feed. Our route ended back at the farmhouse.

Field Notes:

It was an overcast day, but sunscreen was a necessity despite the clouds. From all the weeks' rains, the air was humid, so cool clothing will stand you in good stead. Hydration and energy snacks are necessary to keep your energy levels up. Our preferred Merrell Footwear helped us navigate the rocky terrain and muddy sections. A hiking stick is recommended to assist with the more rocky and technical areas.

Trail Log:

Despite the trail being a shorter distance, it is rated as moderate, and a good level of fitness is required. It's a picturesque hike with a variety of landscapes.

The views were spectacular, and we spotted some buck and vultures flying overhead. The farm has a Labyrinth walk for those who want to experience some self reflection and self-discovery. It's a beautiful trail that we thoroughly enjoyed. Go give it a visit and see for yourself 👣
