A technical trail

A rain jacket, hiking stick, and a trusted pair of Merrell hiking boots to navigate extreme slippery conditions

Route:

We started with a 1 km hike from the lodge's parking towards the overnight hut where the trails begin. We decided to tackle the trail in reverse, due to the severe weather conditions and headed towards the top end of Hamerkop kloof. We gradually made our way up the mountainside before taking the link exit down towards the kloof edge again. With all the rains, we were lucky enough to see two waterfalls displaying their beauty which we had not seen on our previous visit.

We encountered many rock pools along our journey, which would have been great for a dip on a hot day. We headed further down the gorge before exiting up the ladder. It is well anchored and secure. After taking in the stunning views of the kloof, we headed back to the overnight hut for a short break and some high fives after a tough hike!

Field Notes:

If you would like a challenge and aren't afraid of heights, then this trail is for you. A rain jacket, hiking stick, sense of humor in pouring rain and a positive attitude were needed. My preferred Merrell hiking boots did the trick, helping me navigate the extreme slippery conditions.

Trail Log:

The trail was technical due to the conditions, and one must be mentally and physically prepared. The trail is well marked, and there's plenty of rock climbing and scampering. The overnight hut offers accommodation for up to 21 hikers and is a great spot for school groups or team building groups.
