Mpumalanga
Stables Hut to Mac Mac Hut, Fanie Botha multi-day hiking trail.
Day 3 is a 17.5km trail
A technical route. Cardio fitness and muscle strength are essential
A sturdy pair of Merrell shoes, and enough water
We started the early morning with misty and chilly weather which started slowly clearing. The route took us on a long sand road with a gentle ascent along the mountain side. Before we knew it we were above the clouds, not realising how high the climb was.
While enjoying this view, one can see the trail that will lead you along the mountain ridge and take you down into the valleys gorge far below. The fresh water pool in the lush forest served us with a perfect lunch spot and quick dip. The trail took us back up the mountain, where we followed the ridges before making a steep descent into the forest below. Finally, it led us to the Mac Mac Hut, a very welcome sight after an 8-hour hike!
Follow The RouteThe most important item to have on the Fanie Botha trail is a sturdy pair of shoes with good grip. Our Merrells always keep us safe. The narrow mountain ridge trails require stability for balance. Hydration is essential on this route, so always make sure you have enough water. The stream we expected to drink from was dry, so ensure you carry your own supply.
Join Our Hiking ClubThis trail was rated at 9/10 and is considered a technical route. Again, cardio fitness and muscle strength are essential. Not recommended for those with no hiking experience.
The hut we stayed at had a long drop with only a water tank for bathing, so preparation for this is recommended. Another adventurous day done and dusted! Stay tuned for our last day's insights 👣
