Groenkloof Nature Reserve

By Must Love Hiking

Pretoria

The temperature was -1 degrees as we arrived at Groenkloof Nature Reserve - Hiking Trail in Pretoria. The drive from Johannesburg was short and the venue was easy to find. This venue has multiple activities for the guests including hiking and horseback riding. There is a tuck shop where you can get some coffee to warm you up and defrost before you set off on the hike.

We followed the Yellow route which is the 10.5km trail

Route:

There are multiple trail options at this venue. We prepared to do the 10.5km yellow trail.

We followed the Yellow route which is the 10.5km trail. The route starts with a rocky ascent for quite some time before you get to the flat terrain.

Your heart rate very quickly rises as you navigate through the rocky terrain. Nonetheless, it is incredible.

Field Notes:

More and more of our hikers are purchasing the Merrell hiking boots and they are loving it. Our recce team used the Erie Mid Leather Waterproof hiking boot while others opted for the Vego Mid Leather Waterproof boot.

We have a mom and her twin daughters who chose the Crosslander 3 Mid Waterproof hiking boot.

Our Merrell footwear is always a winner and for this particular trail, it is non-negotiable to have the correct footwear and socks.

You can purchase your Merrell footwear online or at your nearest Cable & Co. store.

Trail Log:

The trail is rugged and moderate. The first 1km is extremely rocky but since it has a slight zigzag formation, it makes it easier to navigate through to the top. Most of the terrain is rocky with loose stones that can become quite slippery.

We were delighted to witness two graceful giraffes grazing in the field and also zebra later on. At the end of the trail, we were welcomed by stunning horses.

I enjoyed hiking this trail and found the somewhat challenging terrain a breath of fresh air.

The cost for this trail is currently R55 pp, there is a pensioner rate of R35. No booking is required.

They only accept card payments.

There are different rates for the horseback activity.
