Hennops Hiking Trails

By Must Love Hiking

Pretoria

"In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks."

–John Muir

We returned to this hiking trail because many of our hikers enjoyed it the last time but due to the large group, they could not experience all the trail has to offer. Today, we were about 40 hikers which made it easier to enjoy the suspension bridge, the cable car, and the tyre stairway to the cave.

It was delightful to hear how mesmerized our hikers were by all of these activities. We were happy that this time around they could experience it.

We had three hikers celebrate their Hikeaversary with Must Love Hiking today. That means we celebrate the place they first started hiking with us. Shawn Cannel, Lynette Cornelson & Erik Brand.

There are three hiking trails, the 2.5km, 5km and 10km at Hennops Hiking Trails

Intermediate

The terrain is very rocky but well marked and well maintained

Merrell hiking footwear, a hat, water, isotonic and snacks

Route:

We followed the markings for the 10km trail until the split to the escape route which some hikers had to take. This was due to a hiking boot that came undone after 10 years. It was a very old Merrell hiking boot and we are hoping that @Merrell can help a hiker out with another pair of hiking boots.

Field Notes:

This trail is moderate to difficult, and it is vital to have the correct footwear to avoid injuries. We enjoy our @Merrell hiking footwear.

You can own your very own pair of Merrell footwear by going to www.merrell.co.za, let us know when you do so. More of our hikers are wearing Merrells and they are enjoying the experience.

Trail Log:

The terrain is very rocky and there are a few ascents and some stairs among the trees. It was overcast today until we reached the top when the sun came out. It was a bit of a scorcher thereafter and having sufficient water and isotonic was very important.

There are a few suspension bridges and some connecting stairs along the trail. Some of our hikers opted to take the escape route to shorten the 10km and return to base.

The views are spectacular from the top. It is always rewarding to see how far you have come. One should always take time to pause on a trail, embrace the view and ponder for a short while.

The rest periods are vital, and one must watch their step on the rocky terrain. Some hikers did get a minor bruise but nothing serious.

The highlight was crossing the river in the cable car at the end of the trail. You have the option to use the suspension bridge or the car but most of our hikers wanted to experience the exhilaration of going across the Hennops River using the car. You must remember to pull in the rope otherwise you will just hover over the river until a good samaritan shows up to pull you in.

The river made for a good trail at some stages when hiking alongside it. It reminded us of the sounds you hear when you are hiking on the Otter Trail.

The cost for this trail is R100. There is a pensioner rate during the week but not on weekends.
