Hike 49

By Rosalind Bennett

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve, is a hidden gem nestled in the foothills of the Moreleta Kloof in Pretoria. We set off early from Johannesburg, enjoying a spectacular sunrise on route to this very special hiking trail.

The total distance combined is just under 7km.

Beginner

There are two trails at this reserve, the Suikerbos and the Duiker.

They crisscross, forming a figure 8. You can also do them individually, but, when you are hiking this trail, you don’t want it to stop. In fact, our faster paced hikers did the trail twice on this day.

Route:

The entrance to this trail is free, however, you are encouraged to make donations to the Friends of Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve who keep it in pristine condition so that we can visit it and be blown away, as we always are.

We chose to do both trails as a figure 8, crossing over the river. There are a few ascents and descents which are quite moderate. There is ample tree coverage which is appreciated against the winter sun. The trail is well marked and easy to follow without getting lost.

Field Notes:

Our Merrell footwear was so appreciated, as there are many uneven parts of the trail where you need to carefully navigate through. Our recce team all opted for the Erie Mid Leather Waterproof hiking boot, and we are so impressed by it. A hiking stick is recommended for balance and support on parts of the uneven terrain.

Trail Log:

It is a moderate trail in our opinion. It does have sufficient ascents and descents to challenge you. There are parts of this trail that resemble the Otter Trail with the river running through it and the many trees in sight. It gives you a sense of tranquility.

There are several benches along the trail to offer a comfortable rest period where necessary.
There are sufficient bins on the trail to assist with litter.
You will find very clean ablution facilities on the trail which very few hiking trails offer.
We enjoyed a hearty breakfast after the trail at the lovely restaurant at the venue
