Trekking pole, quick drying Merrell trail runners for stream crossings, swimming gear

Route:

Lower Blindekloof is an out and back trail consisting of forest trail, jeep track and boulder strewn river bed. The route takes you uphill to the Monument, then a steep descent into the kloof and then it’s pretty flat walking upstream to the last pool. You are hiking under forest cover most of the time.

Field Notes:

This trail has almost 300m of elevation. A trekking pole is beneficial. You will cross the Blindekloof stream multiple times. Footwear with good grip are essential for slippery rocks and large boulders. On a hot summer day Merrell trail runners will dry very quickly.

Trail Log:

The trail begins at the reserve offices then follows a 2.5km uphill towards the Monument, a stone monument dedicating the opening of the Groendal Reserve. It’s here we have a short break before the steep descent into the kloof. Coming upon the first pool, many of us jumped in for a quick refreshing dip. There are 8 pools along the trail, our favorite pool is Pool 6 as it has a large bank to sit beside and enjoy our lunch and it’s one of the largest pools for swimming.

We feel like we are in a Jurassic paradise, sitting beside the pool with steep cliff faces rising above us and large green ferns dipping down into the water. Sadly we must leave this piece of heaven on earth and return the way we came.

The trail is marked but, in some places, especially river crossings, not very well marked. So keep your eyes peeled.

Run by Eastern Cape Tourism, the day hike cost is R83 per person (2024 rates) and they only accept cash.

Get there early as it takes a little time to complete indemnity forms and be issued a hiking permit.

The closest shops are in Uitenhage so bring all you need with you. It’s a wildlife reserve so no dogs are allowed.
