Rhenoster Trail Run

By Shaun, Voets Toets Hiking

Our beautiful setting for this week was the Crocodile River Reserve. Approximately 3500 hectares of land and was proclaimed a Protected Nature Reserve in 2019 according to the National Environment Protected Act.

There was a 5km and 12km trail route on offer.

Beginner

Run the Rhenoster trail run is hosted once a year and is situated on the farmlands of the local plot owners.

Grab a pair of all-rounder shoes, with good grip and stability.

Route:

The trail is suitable for families with young children and avid trail runners. It’s a flat trail that loops you next to the Crocodile river. The scenery is truly representative of our African plains. It’s a vast veld with grasslands and more lush vegetation closer to the river. The sound of the running water brings a calming element to the hike.

Field Notes:

The “Mother of all boots” Moab Merrell shoes was a good fit for this terrain. Whether I was taking a slow walk or had a burst of energy going into a run, my Merrell Moab Flight shoes were a winner.

They boast comfort and are light weight, which makes the journey so rewarding. This shoe is an all-rounder, as it has the elements of good grip and provided my feet with the stability needed for unexpected rocky areas.

Trail Log:

Such a beautiful winters morning with runners/walkers and hikers that all have something in common, and that is a love for nature and keeping fit. Such camaraderie between like minded people certainly makes our country a better place 🇿🇦.

The history of mankind in this particular area stretches way back to the Stone Age, which makes for fascinating conversation about our rich history. In the reserve are various rivers that flow through namely the, Crocodile, Hennops and Jukskei rivers. It boasts over 300 species of birdlife and has vast animal life ranging from large buck to frogs, tortoises and insects.
