Shelter Rock Adventures is situated in the Magaliesburg mountain range, just a stone's throw away from Johannesburg. This trail is one of our favourites as its breathtaking view from the top of the mountain is truly beautiful. This trail boasts a wide range of flora and fauna, and is steeped in South African war history dating back to the 1800s.

Route:
We rated this trail as easy to moderate. It has beautiful scenery and is well-marked. At times the route is quite rocky, so fancy footwork comes in handy. It provides a good cardio workout, especially on the incline heading towards the top of the mountain. Once at the top, you'll be blown away by the beautiful views, making all the huffing and puffing worth it!

Field Notes:
We recommend a hiking stick to navigate your way around the more rocky areas. Merrell Footwear is also a must! Sunscreen, adequate hydration, and a few snacks to enjoy on top of the mountain were on our list. We heard and saw a troop of baboons en route, so it's important to always be aware and respectful of nature in these situations. Feeding of any wildlife is strictly prohibited.

The beautiful scenery and views really made our adventure so enjoyable. The base camp offers braai and picnic facilities which we thoroughly enjoyed afterwards. There is a small pool/jacuzzi that comes in handy when you want to cool down after your walk. Put this one on your hiking list for 2024! 👣
