Tsitsikamma

By Voets Toets Hiking

Day 3 was upon us, and everybody was up early preparing coffee and breakfast. We were blessed with an amazing sunrise, and we knew today we would be heading even deeper into the Tsitsikamma mountains and forest. The true sense of isolation began to take hold.

Day 3: The Tsitsikamma Trail routes

We began our hike, heading along the path through a fynbos-rich area called 'Ouveldrug'. After a few kilometres, we entered 'Buffelsbos', where the last buffalo of the Tsitsikamma was shot and killed in 1886. In this eerie and enchanted patch of indigenous forest, the trail begins its eastward course through the mountains. We then crossed the Bloukrans River at Waterwitelsgat before taking a rest at this marvellous swimming spot. The rest of the trail is predominantly flat terrain through flower-rich fynbos and forest. Shortly before reaching the Keurbos Hut, rockpools resemble natural jacuzzis.

Water shoes are essential for river crossings, and a trekking pole was needed to help with balance. Hydration is essential, although there are many streams to fill up along the way. Sunscreen, hat, and energy snacks are vital, and my preferred Merrell boots handled the slippery rocks and trail with ease.
