Waterproof shoes have a membrane sealed into the upper that keeps water out, so your feet stay dry in rain, puddles, wet grass and shallow stream crossings. Water-friendly shoes and sandals do the opposite: they let water in and drain it quickly, which makes them better for beach days, rivers and kloofing. If you want dry feet, choose waterproof.
Merrell’s waterproof footwear uses breathable membranes that keep water out while letting sweat and heat escape. On very hot, dry days a non-waterproof shoe will still feel cooler. For mixed South African conditions, such as Drakensberg hikes, winter-rainfall trails in the Cape or misty mornings on the Garden Route, waterproof gives you the most versatility.
Mid boots rise above the ankle, giving extra support and protection on rocky, uneven terrain or when carrying a heavier pack. They also keep water and debris out when you step into deeper puddles or streams. Low-cut waterproof shoes are lighter and more agile, making them ideal for day hikes, well-maintained trails and everyday wear in wet weather.
After each hike, brush off dirt and mud and rinse with clean water if needed. Let them air-dry at room temperature, away from heaters or direct sun, which can damage the materials. Over time, reapply a waterproofing spray to the outer fabric or leather to help water bead off the surface.
