Piesangkloof 4x4 Hiking Trails & Bush Camp is a farm located at the foothills of the Magaliesburg mountains. It's about an hour's drive from Johannesburg, so it is close enough for a day hike adventure.
Voets Toets Hiking completed the red route on this visit. The trail is moderate to difficult, and good fitness levels are required. The trail took us on a beautiful journey which was by no means easy!
It consists of a steep rock ascent onto the top of the mountain where you will be blown away by the beauty of the grassy landscape at the top. The vultures also made a brief appearance, just enough to watch them gliding along the mountain range.
The trail proceeds along the mountain ridge when you are taken into a steep descent into the gorge. It's a steep descent, but there are ropes attached to the various trees to assist you in climbing down safely. Once in the gorge, the rocky outcrops and natural springs are truly spectacular!
On this trail specifically, we recommend Merrell shoes as they were truly their weight in gold when it came to grip and stability. A hiking stick is necessary for balance. Gloves are essential as they provide grip when navigating the rock climbs and the rope descent into the gorge. Always remember safety comes first, so take your time on this trail and have frequent breaks.
