VoetsToetsHiking tackled one of Gauteng's toughest and most rewarding day hikes, the Bokmakierie Trail at Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. With relentless climbs, rocky descents, and sweeping Highveld views, this trail delivers a proper fitness challenge surrounded by the beauty of the Suikerbosrand mountain range.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve routes

We set off early in the morning from the visitors' car park, and it wasn't long before we started climbing the mountainside. This trail can quickly humble you, with its constant elevation gains and descents. There is no shade on the route, so an early start is recommended.

Once we reached the top, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the reserve. We made our way down into the valley, passing a small dam, and soon after, we found ourselves ascending again. After a short stop at the top, we proceeded down into the valley, only to ascend another mountain once more.

We followed the trail along the ridgeline and soon spotted our finish line in the distance. Along the trail, we spotted zebra as well as eland. We eventually arrived back at the car park tired, with burning legs but a strong sense of accomplishment.

The trail is moderate to challenging, so a good level of fitness is required. Our preferred Merrell hiking boots were comfortable as always and handled the difficult terrain with ease. Due to the constant exposure to the sun, plenty of water and sunscreen are essential. Trekking poles will also definitely come in handy along this trail.
