Most Merrell hiking footwear is comfortable straight out of the box, but it’s still worth wearing new boots or shoes around the house and on short walks before a big hike. This lets them mould to your feet and helps you spot any pressure points early. Leather boots in particular soften and shape to your feet over the first few outings.
They should feel snug through the heel and midfoot, with about a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe so your toes don’t hit the front on descents. Try them on in the afternoon, when your feet are slightly swollen, and wear the socks you’ll hike in. Your heel shouldn’t lift much when you walk.
Hiking boots and shoes give you more support, protection and durability, which matters on rocky terrain, longer hikes or with a heavier pack. Trail running shoes are lighter and more flexible, so they suit fast-paced day hikes on well-maintained trails. If you hike regularly on mixed South African terrain, dedicated hiking footwear is the more reliable choice.
It depends on how often you hike and the terrain you cover, but a quality pair typically lasts several hundred kilometres of trail use. Replace them when the outsole tread is worn smooth, the midsole feels flat and less supportive, or the upper starts to split. Worn-out footwear loses grip and support, which raises your risk of slips and sore feet.
